ABSTRACT
This study is an assessment of teachers and students opinion on the impact of social studies in curbing juvenile delinquency among junior secondary schools in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study had three research questions and three null hypotheses. The survey researchdesign was utilized. The research instrument used was the Social Studies Juvenile Delinquency Questionnaire (SSJDQ). A total of 1,000 questionnaires were administered (student = 720 and teachers = 280) but only 965 (97%) were retrieved which comprised 690for students and 275 for teachers. Apart from qualitative analysis of the opinions of the respondents, the tool ofstudents? t-test statistic wasapplied to the hypotheses of the study. The study revealed that there was no significant difference in the opinion of teachers and students? on the impact of social studies in curbing juvenile delinquency among JSS students. On the opinion of male and female students? on the impact of social studies in curbing juvenile delinquency among JSS students, the result of the t-test also showed that there was no significant difference. Also no significant difference was found when the opinion of rural and urban teachers and students on the impact of social studies in curbing juvenile delinquency among JSS students was sought. Thus, the study could find no sufficient evidence to reject any of the hypotheses of the study. This implies that social studies as a subject does impact the curbing of juvenile delinquency among Junior Secondary School students in Kaduna State. Based on the findings of the study, one of the recommendations of the study is thatteachers and government should improve on the quality of social studies teaching- learning process and provide socio-metric strategies to test the application and implications of social studies lessons especially on contemporary issues like juvenile delinquency. Another recommendation of the study is for the National Education Research Department Council (NERDC)to review and upgrade the social studies curriculum to cover senior secondary schools. This will help to consolidate on the gains of the subject especially as students become more mature and acquire better abilities to learn and apply the moral lessons from social studies to their lives.
