ABSTRACT
This study examines Tomkins' (1962, 1963) theory of emotions which relates central nervous system (CITS) activity with the behaviour of facial muscles in the facial expressions of emotions. The sample of the study consisted of 100 subjects both male and female, selected among the Ibos of Nigeria consisting of 60 males and 40 females. In this study the investigator is concerned about the facial expressions of the following five emotions of sadness, anger, fear, happiness, and love of both males and females among-the Ibos. It was decided that photographs from four different areas of film industry popular in Nigeria would be used. These four industries were the Western films, the Indian films, the Chinese films, and the native Nigerian shows. Efforts were made to collect the facial photographs of the film actors and actresses of these four different areas from different film magazines available locally except for the Chinese male's - picture on happiness (photograph No. 11) and the Nigerian actors and actresses who were professionals in their field and who agreed to pose for their passport photographs to be taken for each of the emotions studied. Analysis of data was done by using the t-test. The results of which are discussed in the project.
