ABSTRACT
In the last decade (2006 - 2016) the problems of housing provision remain recurrent and is often characterised by rapid population growth beyond the means to provide one; the need for better designs and housing deficits especially in urban areas. Proffered solutions have included mass housing estates, storey buildings and low-cost housing schemes. Most of these schemes recorded little or no success as the intended end users, people better suited to provide valuable information about their required housing needs being left out of the process, giving rise to post-occupancy reconstruction and abandonment problems. This research is an investigation into the design requirements (i.e. spaces, functions and services) of multi-storey residential buildings gotten from the questionnaire survey conducted on current occupants of two multi-storey buildings in Ikoyi, Lagos state, and the integrating the findings from this research into the design of a proposed multi-storey residential building in Lekki, Lagos State, The methodology for this research involves descriptive analysis of responses from 55 respondents (74% retrieval rate) of a 75 numbered questionnaire survey administered to respondents in two locations in Ikoyi, Lagos. Results show functions and services rating higher than the conventional residential spaces, however 30.9% showed the need for more bedrooms, which revalidates the need for closer prior consultation with would-be beneficiaries of mass housing scheme.
