ABSTRACT
The properties of compressed straw slabs were investigated. The aim of the study is to determine the physical and mechanical properties of the compressed straw slabs (CSS) produced using rice straw. The study consists of extensive literature review of available relevant literature and laboratory tests. After review of literature which served as background knowledge, the compressed straw slabs were produced using two types of binders namely. Gum Arabic and Cement identified as CSS-1 and CSS-2 and using a constant mix ratio of 30% straw and 70% binder. An adapted version of a screw pressing machine was used for pressing the slabs with a maximum capacity of 0.1344N/mm2. The properties of CSS-1 and CSS-2 considered in the study were density, moisture content (physical properties) and the mechanical properties considered were conductivity and bending strength (modulus of rupture). After curing for 30 days, the slabs were tested for the aforementioned properties. - It was found that CSS-1 has an average density of 303.2Kg/m3. a moisture content of 8.70%, a conductivity of 0.035w/mÂC and a bending strength of 0.33N/mm2. On the other hand. CSS-2 has an average density of 425.53Kg/m3. a moisture content of 5.26%. a conductivity of 0.025w/mÂC and a bending strength of 0.29N/mm2. These values conform to those in existing standards (BS 4046, Parts I & II. 1966 and 1971, BS 1142, Part I, 1971, BS 1811, Part I, 1971 and F.A.O Standards for Plywood and other Wood Based Panels: 1963). In this light, both types of slabs are recommended (after further investigation) for use as insulating material, and for permanent formwork for reinforced concrete elements.
