ABSTRACT
The study was conducted during the 1992/93 irrigation season at the Kadawa sector of the Kano River Project (KRP) , with the primary aim of evaluating the performance of a part of the distribution system (distributary canal and field channels), irrigation water distribution and allocation methods and the relative water supply (RWS) index, as they affect control, operation and equity. Block 3F7 was selected as the experimental site. Stage measurements were monitored at the selected stations on both the distributary canal, field channels and farm units. Discharge was obtained from calibrated structures (cilt-throat flumes) . The water conveyance efficiencies, and losses were determined for each of the selected stations. The results obtained from the study showed that 84 1/s on the average was recorded as discharge for the distributory canal (DC), with conveyance efficiency and losses of 87% and 14 1/s, respectively. The average field channel discharge of 15 1/s was recorded as against a design discharge of 28 1/s, while the conveyance efficiency and losses were 65% and 4 1/s, respectively. The result obtained for the various farm units showed significant variations, both at the head-end and tail-end of the farm, hence low equity of distribution as a result of low water supply. The field evaluation of the RWS, showed that all the plots recorded low values, which indicates under irrigation in all the plots. However, the high performance of field crops and high yield recorded was due to contribution from high water table recorded in most parts of the project area. The 1.5 t/ha yield for wheat on the avarage, further confirmed the high performace of the crops.
