ABSTRACT
In Nigeria, therapeutic landscape development is a grey area both in research and design implementation, and is yet to be given recognition in this part of the world. Therapeutic landscape is an aspect of landscape architecture that deals with healing through a conscious design process, simulating nature to provide a convivial environment for healthy living. The model for the research is built on the works of Elizabeth C. Brawley, Sara O. Marberry and Joan M. Whale who attempted to develop unifying themes for the works of several therapeutic landscape architects such as Cooper Marcus, Clare Cooper Marcus, Annalisa Gartman Vapaa, Marni Barns and many others. These themes culminate into a set of principles used to analyze Landscape Architectural designs from a therapeutic perspective. Case studies of various garden types and design consideration were researched and also comparative analyses of three specialist hospitals were carried out, two (2) from the northern part of Nigeria and the temperate region of the United States of America (U.S.A) have been documented, and the principles guiding the design of the landscape have been analyzed from a therapeutic perspective. Finally, these findings were further drawn up in to criteria.
